rope taking action, changing lives

Volunteering

For many people, working as volunteers in the UK can be a great way of being involved in the work of Rope and helping to make a real difference in the lives of people all around the world. Volunteers help to keep our running costs to a minimum, often bringing to the organisation a life time of accumulated skills. The tasks covered by volunteers include administering the children’s support programme, setting up and staffing Rope stands at festivals and events, providing design services for publications, being part of our finance team, etc.

Many of our volunteers work as part of the team based at our Amersham office but there are volunteer tasks which can be done in any part of the UK and Ireland. For example, you could represent Rope in your local church making sure the congregation is kept informed about Rope’s work, or you could be part of a group, fundraising for Rope.

There are a number of 'vacancies' at present which might suit anyone with a couple of hours a week to spare.

Volunteer's Testimonies

“I came to volunteer for Rope working with the sponsorship programmes as I wanted to do something different. It was shocking to learn about the poverty of people in some places and it is humbling to see what can be achieved by so many different volunteers, each one with a different talent, as part of the Rope Team. For me it is very rewarding to see how people in need can be given new chances by us pulling together and giving up some of our time!” – Margerite Griffiths – Orphans and Widows Support Programs

After hearing someone speaking about Rope at a morning service in my church I felt that I would like to help in some way and so I offered to volunteer for one day a week. That was 3 years ago. It is a real joy to be able to work in this friendly office and to be able to contribute in some small way to the running of this charity. I am continually encouraged by the way small gifts can make a big difference to the lives of those who have so little.”Colin Woodhams – Report-back writer

"Six months after retiring as a Practice Manager in a busy GP surgery, I applied to be a volunteer with Rope. Following an interview I joined the team and was directed into finance. It was like walking through the wardrobe in the Narnia story, I could not believe the world I had entered; people who did not know what 'retail therapy' was or 'time out', they just needed a helping hand to eat, enjoy fresh water, have shelter, not be held in bondage and to be self sufficient. For some children, a school uniform was required before they could receive an education. I know that the resources transferred through Rope will reach those in need, helped by people at local level. Being involved with Rope has changed my life and outlook. I am grateful to all those at Rope for the opportunity to be a volunteer there for the past 6 years." – Joan Blunden - Finance

Volunteers currently needed at the office in Amersham

Trust Fund Application Writer:   Do you have a skill and passion for writing? Are you interested in discovering more about our overseas projects?  If yes, then this opportunity could be for you.

We urgently need someone to help us put together written applications to Trusts and other funding providers, to help us secure financing for specific projects.  An interest in international development would be beneficial, but enthusiasm for writing and research are key.  Full guidance and training will be given.  Ideally, you would be based at our Amersham office, but there is flexibility to do this work from home provided you are available to visit the office around once a fortnight.  We would be asking for you to give approximately 4-6 hours a week.  For more details, see the Role Description

Finance Assistant:  Do you have a way with numbers and finance, and do you like working as part of a friendly team?  If so, perhaps you may like to assist Rope in the crucial role of monitoring our regular income.

We are urgently seeking a volunteer to assist us in reconciling the monthly income into the Rope account.  You would need to be able to demonstrate accuracy and careful attention to detail, and be comfortable working with numbers, bank statements and databases.  Full training on the software and on the whole process will be given, as well as on-going support and supervision.  We would be asking for a commitment of half a day per week, preferably on a Monday morning if at all possible.  This is so that you would be able to work alongside another experienced finance volunteer.  We offer a very friendly working environment and fully appreciate the support of our many volunteers.  A commitment for a minimum of 6 months would be required due to the time we will need to invest in training.  For more details, see the Role Description
